From a small start in Amaranth to a growing network
Since 2014 we have listened to local voices, matched them with resources, and watched neighbourhoods grow stronger year after year. The timeline below records the steps of that journey, each one built on the trust of volunteers, the commitment of partner organizations, and the generosity of every donor who believed in the work. We mark these milestones not as an endpoint, but as a measure of how much more we can still do together. Every number on this page stands for a person we met, a need we heard, and a promise we kept, and we carry that responsibility into every new season of work.

2014
Foundation established in Amaranth
Act Foundation Canada was registered in Amaranth, Ontario, with a single table, a modest budget, and a large conviction: that the best ideas come from the people who live closest to the challenge. Our founding directors spent the first year meeting community groups across Dufferin County and the surrounding towns, listening carefully before offering any kind of help. The earliest projects were small and practical, covering food support, warm clothing for the winter months, and modest grants to neighbourhood halls and local clubs. Those first conversations taught us how far a trusted relationship can travel, and they still shape the way we work every single day. They also gave us a simple operating rule that we still follow: ask first, act second, and never assume that a boardroom knows better than a front porch. The names of the people in those early rooms still appear on our volunteer lists today, a living reminder that continuity matters more than speed.

2018
First regional grant program launched
In 2018 we opened our first regional grant program, a structured fund that invites local groups to apply for support on a clear, transparent cycle. The response far exceeded our expectations, with applications arriving from school councils, food banks, church groups, sports clubs, and arts collectives across the region. By the end of that first cycle we had distributed more than forty awards to initiatives that our own team would never have imagined on our own. The program taught us that our real job is not to direct change, but to remove the barriers that stand between good people and great ideas. It also taught us to keep the review process light, so that the groups doing the real work could spend their energy on their projects rather than on paperwork. We have now run the same open cycle every year since, and each round reminds us that generosity in this region is deep and dependable.

2022
Youth and skills programs expanded
By 2022 we had grown from a small granting body into a year-round community partner, and our youth and skills work expanded to match that growth. We launched mentorship placements, after-school learning circles, and practical training workshops that connect young people with mentors in trades, technology, and the creative arts. Hundreds of young residents have now moved through these programs, many returning later as volunteers or workshop leaders themselves. Our experience since has confirmed what we suspected all along: when young people are trusted and supported, they become the strongest advocates for their own communities. Mentors tell us that the best moments come when a young person solves a problem they once believed belonged only to adults, and those are the moments we work hardest to make more common. Parents and teachers regularly describe the quiet shift they see in participants, from watching at the edge of the room to leading the discussion with confidence.

Partner network reaches 40 organizations
Today Act Foundation Canada works alongside a partner network that spans more than forty organizations, including municipalities, school boards, healthcare partners, and grassroots neighbourhood groups. This network allows us to share resources, coordinate emergency support, and avoid the duplication that often slows down community work. We coordinate winter warmth drives, food security initiatives, and training pathways across the whole region rather than in isolation. Looking ahead, we intend to deepen these relationships and to make sure that every program we run carries the voice of the community it serves. Our shared calendar now coordinates seasonal drives, funding rounds, and training events so that no neighbourhood is left scrambling while another has resources to spare. The final milestone of this chapter is the starting point of the next one, and we intend to carry that forward motion for another twelve years and beyond.
We believe that real change begins where people live, and that no neighbourhood should have to wait for someone else to act on its behalf. Act locally, grow together: that is the promise of our foundation, repeated in every grant, every workshop, and every hand we join across this region. We also believe that the people who plant a garden, staff a food line, or coach a youth team are the real builders of community, and that our role is to stand behind them with resources, respect, and patient encouragement.
